  36.   There are three "parts" to Touch.  In the first part, the main theme
  37. was the love triangle between Tatsuya, Kazuya, and Minami.  Uesugi
  38. Tatsuya and Kazuya were twins, and Asakura Minami was the girl next door.
  39.   The second part of Touch concentrated on Tatsuya trying to put himself
  40. into Kazuya's shoes.  Tatsuya got "traded" from the boxing team to the
  41. baseball team for a picture of Lum with an autograph of Takahashi Rumiko.
  42. Tatsuya pitched the Meisei team into the second round of the regional
  43. tournament, but lost to Nishimura and Seinan High School in an extra
  44. inning game while pitching a no-hitter.  Minami, who had been the baseball
  45. team manager, also became a member of the school's rhythmic gymnastics
  46. team.  Minami did exceptionally well and made it to the national tournament.
  47.   The third part of Touch concentrated on Tatsuya making himself good
  48. enough for Minami.  Meisei got a new coach because the old coach got
  49. sick.  The new coach worked the team like the devil.  But it paid off
  50. as Meisei made it to the finals of the regional tournament to face
  51. Nitta and Sumi Technical High School.   -HD

  87. Manga Class that even Monkeys Can Draw (Sarudemo Kakeru Manga Kyoushitsu)

  89.   A pretty good study of the manga industry.  The story is about two guys
  90. named Koji Aihara and Kentaroh Takeguma (the artist and story writer of
  91. the actual manga) who set out on an ambition to reach for the top in the
  92. manga business.   -KM
  93.   The manga industry is in trouble, and there's no better way to address the 
  94. issue than to insult it with humor.  You don't have to read too many mangas 
  95. to appreciate the "in-jokes" in Saruman.  All mangas today are so alike you'd 
  96. only need to read one to guess what the rest of the genre looks like.  The 
  97. story of Saruman is told through a pair of manga wanna-be's, one a rookie 
  98. artist of marginal talent, and another a seasoned veteran who knows the 
  99. industry tricks inside out.  The education began when the rookie tried to 
  100. apply some common sense to solve manga problems, and the veteran refuting the 
  101. common sense by providing examples that are totally counter-intuitive, yet 
  102. strangly familiar in our manga reading experiences.  This is the genius of 
  103. Saruman; it exposes the madness without losing the humor.  Aihara and 
  104. Takekuma were able to bite the hand that feeds them, and then got permission 
  105. to do more.  Saruman gets wilder and more hilarious as it progresses, and not 
  106. since Be Free have I seen a manga with so much energy spilling from beginning 
  107. to end.  Read it as a story, read it as a satire, or read it as a warning, 
  108. Whatever a reader looks for, Saruman delivers.  Read it, and rec.arts.manga 
  109. will never look the same to you again.  -DM

  153.  and attitude. He uses "hentai" with its double meaning of "metamorphosis"
  154.  to describe weird backgrounds, assorted personalities, and other strangeness.

  160.   Morumo 1/10 is a combination of super-hero, comedy, and love story.
  161. Morumo is an alien girl raised on earth. She is 16.3 meters tall at
  162. age 16 and weighs 43 tons. She looks human (with pink hair) if you
  163. are far enough away, well her proportions are human. She occasionally
  164. takes a shrinking serum that reduces her body by 1/10 in size.

  176. when he/she gets excited. But it's not only him.  His family is filled
  177. with gender-changing people.

  181.   It is a semi-parody of the trouble-shooter genre. Basically,
  182. its about 3 women with inhuman capabilities in their specialties
  183. solving cases. It is derived and an improvement over his
  184. earlier work, Sheriff. One of the members is also from Sheriff.
  185. The names and titles are: Mei the cyberqueen (super hacker),
  186. Akira the iron fist (great strength, very athletic, has scars
  187. all over her body), and Hikaru the quick (unmatched pick pocket,
  188. has super speed, can grab a fired bullet from the air and 
  189. steal bullets from guns without the user being aware; when she
  190. was younger she was in Sheriff and was a thief, but she reformed).

  206.   Quoting a certain alt.manga personality, 'The author is more lost than
  207. the readers'. Just when you think the story is beginning to make sense,
  208. it ends. -DC
  209.   It at least tried to be serious, although I'm not quite sure serious what.
  210. Art is primitive, pre-Tron, low-zip Asamiya.  While it is common knowledge
  211. Asamiya Kia can't write, Vagrant has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he
  212. can't READ either.  The story, while messed up big time, is not complex in
  213. terms of players and situations.  It tried to tell 4 different stories in
  214. utterly unrelated settings.  The main characters teleport/dimension-warp/what-
  215. ever universes and solve problems, not unlike some old network scifi shows.
  216. The formula may yet work had the dialogues not been as corny, pace not as
  217. dreadful, and situations not as uninvolving.  The story writer, Vauxhall
  218. Production, meshed together space colony, fantasy kingdom, desert village,
  219. and then a moon cult space opera into one blob; the teleporting was just
  220. a Monty Python excuse to move from one setting to another.  If I sound angry,
  221. that's because it took me $25 original, $20 Chinese DX translation, 8 rereads,
  222. and hours of soul searchings to figure this out.  Now that I have, you don't.
  223. If the only reason you're considering this title is because it's from Asamiya,
  224. then that should be good enough reason for you not to. -DM

  258.   A collection book of some of Asari's short comics from 1980 to 1988 put out
  259. as an Animage Comics Special book, this collection shows the variety of
  260. different stories and styles that Asari is comfortable with.  My personal
  261. favorite is 'The Magnificent Seven Zombies.'  (A somewhat paraphrased title.) 
  262. Included is a list of all Asari's published stories up to 1988, for fanatical
  263. collectors.

  267.   When a motley band of travelling performers have a deep-space collision with
  268. another spacecraft, they find that the sole survivor of the other craft is a
  269. humanoid infant.  They decide to raise the child as their own on the nearest
  270. planet as they wait for other members of the girl's race to come and find her. 
  271. Corona-chan grows up as their daughter, and the manga details her five-year-old
  272. adventures with her fuzzball mother, her robot-soldier father, her
  273. living-central-nervous-system pet, and the other bizarre members of the local

  278.   This is something Asari Yoshitoh did for one of those Gakken science
  279. magazines (I think the one for fifth graders) and each episode, he
  280. handles a different topic. It's really interesting because he talks
  281. about pretty recent developments. Cloning lettuce, milk-derivative
  282. cloth, food made out of crab shells,...neat stuff. The entire second
  283. volume is dedicated to the space program. -KT

  285. Wahhaman

  287.   Wahhaman is a special robot soldier built ten thousand years ago by the
  288. Atlanteans.  Found and dug up in present-day Tokyo, he cannot remember any
  289. of his past, due to a nasty knock to the head he received at some point.
  290. People tend to mistake Wahhaman, who is unable to speak except for laughing
  291. when going into battle, for someone or something that they are looking for
  292. in their own lives. -JE

  361. Artwork may not appeal to many, because to create the sentimental snow
  362. environment, the background is always dark.  But the stories are quite good

  368. RG-VEDA has very little to do with them in terms of story. This manga is
  369. CLAMP's first major work and its story and art are getting better and better
  370. with each volume. IMO, RG-VEDA defines the current "state of the art" of
  371. Shojo-manga. HIGHLY recommended.

  382. to their lost stuff.  Nokoru is very popular among female students, and he's
  383. quite glad to help them.  He is sort of the "leader" of the team, and he is

  399.   This was originally a late-night TV series using real actors.
  400. It was about two brothers who were locked up in a lab because

  402. leave the lab.  I think the video is already out.  The novel,
  403. written by the director of the TV series, will finish at 5 volumes. -TKa

  434. he meets the little magician Taruruuto.  Taru's magic helps him to
  435. deal with girls, triumph over bullies and meet other challenges.
  436. Lots of fun, slapstick and protracted battles, a real "feelgood" title
  437. that embodies the spirit of many Shonen Jump mangas.

  440.   Kintarou is a 25 year old genius, a dropout from Tokyo University,
  441. who likes to tutor and study.  His favourite subject for research: women.

  597. same dreams for several years.  The dreams form a continuing story. She
  598. eventually finds herself having the same dreams. It turns out that these
  599. dreams are actually remembrances of their past lives, which happened to be
  600. as alien researchers stationed on the Earth's moon. Also, as the story
  601. progresses the other members of the moon research team are found
  602. reincarnated as well. The seven of them try to solve the mystery of what
  603. their past lives were, and why they are remembering it.
  604.   Adding a bit of excitement to the story is the fact that (1) the
  605. reincarnated people have some special powers that remained from their past
  606. lives, and (2) certain of them harbor great enmity toward others, and are
  607. acting rather irrational.
  608.   I think it is a good suspense story. It is definitely not merely one of
  609. those "love stories for junior high school girls". ^_^ A bit of advice
  610. though: It is very hard to keep the relationships between the characters
  611. straight, as you have to deal with rather complicated love tangles in both
  612. the present day Japan setting and the "moon story" setting. It doesn't help
  613. that the publisher for some reason decided not to put the usual
  614. "toujyoujinbutu syoukai" in the front of the issues until issue #6.
  615. I would strongly suggest that when you buy #1, buy #6 at the same
  616. time. You can refer to the character chart in the front of #6.  -MC

  715. the individual episodes are also complete, wrapped up stories that can be
  716. fully enjoyed by themselves.
  717.   I really like this series for several reasons, but perhaps what I like
  718. best about it is that it takes place in a real Tokyo.  The scenery is
  719. excellent - one might as well be looking at a photograph. It shows what
  720. Tokyo really looks like. Similarly, the people in the stories are quite
  721. realistic (okay, okay, forget the one "Indiana Jones" episode) and the
  722. problems they encounter are things that really might happen. This series is
  723. written for adults, so the subject matter tends to be things that one
  724. encounters in the working world, and there are no furigana.  -MC

  895. installment of Miyu, and I think the book says something about this

  988. for SJ's typical "boys and girls" audience.  Vol.1-13 is Video Girl Ai,
  989. while vol.14-15 is Video Girl Len (a different story set some years after
  990. VGA, with a brief appearance from Youta).

  1022. copying their work).  The ending was determined by a Morning readers' poll.

  1040. 1982 to 1991, Kousaku Shima's character gradually changes from that of a 
  1041. normal, ambitious salaryman in the beginning as he emerges in the end to 
  1042. become a sort of a "super salaryman," a typical stereotype of the Japanese
  1043. businessman. It has been made into a movie starring Toshihiko Tahara.

  1167. A little boy (about her age) came and saved her.  The boy
  1168. also threw the guy with a judo throw.  But in saving Nonoka,
  1169. this boy got cut in his lower back.  This boy was Nonoka's "prince"
  1170. but Nonoka had no idea who he was.
  1171.   In the first day of high school Nonoka meets this very handsome guy,
  1172. Shinobu, who sat next to her in her class.  Shinobu hates judo
  1173. for some reason that Nonoka hasn't discovered yet.  Also Nonoka meets a
  1174. boy, Yuuya, who is very good in judo.  He wants to set up a judo team
  1175. because the school's team had been closed (because they were too weak).

  1187.  reflects the shoujo influence, and yet his stories are tailored for
  1188.  men.  He started drawing manga at age 13.   -DM

  1197.   Our hero, Kazushi Kubota, will have his heart broken three times (and his 
  1198. virginity intact) before he finds a steady love, and that's just half of the 
  1199. story.  The story can be very light hearted, and then very depressing 
  1200. sometimes.  The tone is, IMHO, overall melancholic.  Comparing with some
  1201. other bland shonen stuffs that are out there, 19 scores far above the

  1244.   The prince agreeed to the terms.  The wizard turned him into a puppy.
  1245. The prince was picked up by Alice, a girl who loves dogs, she has a lot
  1246. of dogs in her house.  The prince falls in love with her.  Later that night,
  1247. he changed himself back to his human shape while she was asleep.  But,
  1248. Alice woke up and asked who he was.  The dumb prince slipped his tongue
  1249. and told her his name.  So what happened then is that he still bring her
  1250. back to Wonderland. He planned to stay with her even if they can not get

  1255. and human.  At that time, it's magic that rules.  The main character

  1257. the ones who are working and they are the ones who protect the men.
  1258. Humans had conquered the moon already, and killed all the moon
  1259. people,  because the moon people have a special power.  The main
  1260. female character is the last of the moon people.  Thomas is actually
  1261. a moon-person as well, but no one knows about it.
  1262.   It turns out that there is a guy within the heroine.  It was a spell
  1263. that happened during the war between the moon people and earth, so now
  1264. they are actually two people in one.  So Thomas has to show her that he
  1265. really loves her, even though she is actually a guy sometimes.   -LL

  1277. is to find bad points about Earthians. They always go in pairs. If the
  1278. bad points reach 10,000 (the score system is not important in the story and
  1279. Kouga Yun did not really explain it in detail), Earth will be destroyed by
  1280. the Angels.
  1281.   All the angels are white in colour, white hairs, white eyes and white wings,
  1282. except one who got black hair, black eyes and black wings. (Black is considered
  1283. to be a unlucky colour on Planet Eden.) His name is Chihaya, and he is a plus
  1284. checker. He went to earth with a minus checker called Kagetsuya, and the story
  1285. is about different people and events they came accross on Earth. -CM

  1292. like a normal human.  Other aliens try to get him to combine with her

  1464. and sloppy to some but it's a stylistic thing; it grows on you. Check
  1465. out his mecha though--really amazing. This and Space Cruiser Yamato
  1466. (also by Matsumoto) are probably the major factors behind the SF-boom
  1467. (still ongoing) of the early 80's. -KT

  1553. sex (and naked bodies) than the current incarnation is.  The artwork
